Southern Sudan - IRC

The IEMF will be a clinical public health intern based in the Malual-kon field site assisting in the planning, implementation and evaluation of efforts to improve the quality of clinical care at two primary health care centers supported by IRC in Aweil East County.

The responsibility of the IEM fellow included:

  • Assessment of current practices:
    • Visit clinical sites, review records, review existing protocols on care for common diseases, observe patient care and compile baseline information on quality of care, including, but not limited to: a knowledge exam to be completed by clinic staff; a supervision checklist to be completed by the intern while observing clinic staff providing patient care; a client satisfaction survey.
  • Develop a schedule of quality improvement activities. Possible ideas include:
    • Group training sessions
      • Good practice in patient care:
      • Treatment protocols for common diseases
      • Integrated management concepts (IMCI, MNCH)
      • Rational prescribing practices
      • Skills in the steps in good patient care
    • One-on-one mentoring of staff providing care, with relevant immediate on-the-job training.
  • Produce a guidance document to support the clinic staff and health program management staff in maintaining the delivery of good quality services following the conclusion of the internship.
